Seculene Polypropylene Made of PCR with Flame Protection
Ecobat | diciembre 4, 2024
Ecobat uses a recycled polypropylene composite with UL 94 V0 classification, which forms a protective foam layer thanks to a halogen-free additive in case of fire. Ideal for the electrical and automotive industries, it also improves the CO2 footprint, for example with e-bike batteries. The polypropylene made of PCR with flame protection is nominated in the competition for the products of the year 2025 in the category Materials.
Plastic must have flame retardant properties in areas where electrical engineering is involved. The test procedure is regulated in UL 94, the standard for testing the flammability of plastics for components in electrical and household appliances.
Ecobat is the first and so far only player in the market to have certified a recycled polypropylene in accordance with UL 94. The highest possible requirement according to the UL 94 V0 standard was met. The certificate, called Yellow Card, entitles Ecobat to sell the PP compound with the trade name PPX 1020 GF 20 V0 as flame retardant material to the electrical/automotive industry.
As an additive, Ecobat uses a solution from the Budit 6 series from the specialty chemicals company Budenheim. The special thing about it is that it is a halogen-free, intumescent flame retardant that meets the highest technical requirements of the compound. In the event of a fire, these form a foamy, charred layer on the surface. This prevents the supply of air to the combustible material and the escape of toxic combustion gases. Thus, the fuel is no longer supplied to the fire and it cannot spread further. The formed foam additionally provides thermal insulation and reduces the formation of further fuel.
The PP compound is used, for example, with e-bike batteries. Here, the individual modules are installed between a honycomb-like braid made of the PP compound. The highlight: Ecobat thus produces a secondary material and replaces primary polyamide. The advantage for the customer: His CO2 balance improves significantly. Cost savings compared to new goods go without saying.
